I grew up listening to many stories about The Taj Mahal , one of the seven wonders of the world. Some are about it being the symbol of undying love . Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built this monument to house the tomb of his favourite wife Mumtaz Mahal who died during the birth of her 14th child. It took nearly 20 years to finish. But soon after the completion, his son Aurangzeb seized the Mughal throne and imprisoned him . He was kept in the Agra fort and whether for consolation or torture he commanded view of Taj Mahal from his window. After his death he was interred beside Mumtaz’s tomb . There are many stories that depict the cruelty of excessive taxation to fund the construction and how the emperor cut the fingers of the architects so that they could not build any replica of the monument.
Long story short, I always thought it to be overrated and over hyped . Of course it was partly because of the numerous stories , being featured in every other bollywood love songs , historical shows that revolve around many myths and horror stories . But when I first saw it with my own eyes , felt exceptionally overwhelmed. In the crowd of a 30th December afternoon felt as if there’s no one around me just the white marbled building and me trying to talk to each other without words. Every inch is so artistically and beautifully crafted that one lifetime is not enough to appreciate this wonder . Only passion, love , grief and enormous wealth can create something as beautiful as Taj Mahal . .
