Two children, two different feeding methods.
Aayana straight away decided she didn’t want to latch on. She cried at the sight of my boobs and screamed every time she was shoved on by a midwife #chillionmynipples
I was producing a LOT of milk. I didn’t want to be defeated and go straight to formula so I decided to express for 6 months. For the first two weeks, I still attempted to breastfeed. I tried everything from breastfeeding clinics to nipple shields. She would feed from a nipple shield but I gave up once I realised it was taking over an hour to feed her. I had to feed her with a nipple shield and express afterwards for another 30 minutes. I was extremely shattered and stressed and ended up resorting to fully expressing.
By my 3rd month, I expressed every 6 hours. And by the 6th month, I was admitted into hospital with a bad flare up of colitis and my medication meant I could no longer breastfeed. Luckily I had stored milk in the freezer which meant Aayana had breast milk for another two months. We alternated this with formula.
Kaavya on the other hand latched on straight away. It was such a relief as I really wanted to experience breastfeeding. I found it a lot easier not having to worry about washing bottles and the costs of formula. I am still researching about breastfeeding. I have so many questions to ask as if I’m a first time mum. I try my best to go to breastfeeding clinics and google is my new best friend.
Both methods worked well for me and both methods also have their bad points.
When they say breast is best, don’t feel put down when you can’t produce enough milk. It doesn’t mean you haven’t tried hard enough, sometimes you can’t produce milk and no amount of of expressing can increase that. Yes breast milk is all your baby needs but sometimes your baby just doesn’t want to latch on. How long can you go stressing yourself and the baby out during feeding? Everyone has their heart set on breastfeeding and deciding to go to formula isn’t always easy. It isn’t a lazy way out and it certainly isn’t cheap. If it works best for you then why not? As long as your baby is fed, that is all that matters. #formula #breast #fedbabyisahappybaby
